About

I started building websites in 1997, before the internet became ‘mainstream’. It was still talked about as a strange thing, only mentioned with caution by the press, and an obviously under-used resource for businesses to profit from.

Over time I became less interested in the geeky, coding side of computers and websites, and more and more interested in what makes people buy.

What makes people stop reading the newspaper articles they paid for, and start reading the adverts that are selling them things?

What makes someone click a button on a website, or open an email?

Why do people buy one bar of chocolate instead of another?

How can you influence someone into giving you money, instead of giving it to your competitor?

I research a lot, almost always with a focus on direct marketing: where you track your results, and you expect something to happen. It’s all very well to make someone laugh with an advert, but I’d much rather they were reaching for their wallet at the same time. A lot of people seem to forget that.

I don’t.

I know that if you spend money on marketing you expect to get more money back, and I’m committed to making that happen.

Marketing in Cornwall

I moved to the north Cornish coast in 2009, and the wonders of the internet makes it easy for me to help clients across the country. I’m perfectly happy to travel, although people rarely object to a day or two by the coast to chat about how they can make some money.

There’s also something about pottering around on a beach that inspires some great ideas during times of writer’s block.

I now work with a fantastic group of people who I work with and outsource work to, meaning that I can choose the perfect person for every job – instead of choosing the person in the office who doesn’t have very much to do. I find this is a very flexible way of working, and provides efficient, high-quality results.
