Let’s get something straight before we go further into mobile phone marketing.
If you send a text message to your contacts every few days telling them how great you are, you’re not going to have any contacts left in a few weeks.
Make sure that anyone you send a text to has asked to receive it, and knows how often you are going to send them.
Good reasons to use text messages (SMS)
- “Deal of the day” – e.g. sandwich shops can send out messages in the morning with a deal of the day, asking for lunch orders
- Reminder service – “don’t forget you’ve got an appointment for a hair cut tomorrow at 10am”
- One-off follow-up – “good to meet you at the exhibition yesterday, do you want to join our email list?”
Mobile phones have made people more flexible, and your use of them should reflect that. You’ve only got a limited amount you can say, and you don’t know whether people are going to be by a computer, or somewhere they can make a phone call. So you want to be quick and to the point, and allow an easy acceptance of your offer.
